Course Overview
The VTCT (ITEC) Level 1 Award in Mental Health Awareness provides a practical introduction to mental health and wellbeing. The course is designed to build a strong foundation by helping learners understand what mental health is, recognise the characteristics of positive mental wellbeing and mental ill-health, and appreciate how mental health can influence everyday life.
Learners will develop an awareness of a range of common mental health conditions, including their signs and symptoms and gain an understanding of their potential impact on individuals, families and communities. The course also explores the social, global, and workplace factors that can affect mental wellbeing, encouraging a broader understanding of mental health in today’s world.
In addition, learners will gain awareness of the types of support available for mental health conditions and how these help can be accessed. On completion, learners will have the knowledge and confidence to recognise mental health concerns, reduce stigma through greater awareness and understand the importance of seeking appropriate support and promote wellbeing.

Reflect on your own position within the mental health continuum.

Understand the nervous system, recognize fight/flight/freeze patterns, identify your personal stress signals and learn foundational techniques for regulation.

How to Support People with Mental Health (Emotional Regulation & Cognitive Skills )
Learn why emotional regulation and cognitive skills are essential for maintaining good mental health. Explore the emotions wheel, along with practical self-compassion and self-reflection exercises. Gain effective tools and strategies to strengthen mental wellness, manage stress, and set healthy boundaries for greater clarity and a sense of safety.

Learning Outcome
By the end of the course, learners can identify early signs of stress and burnout in yourself and others, develop mental fitness habits, design a personalized daily self-care plan for long-term mental health using evidence-based tools, apply active listening skills to support colleagues facing mental distress and implement boundaries to maintain professional wellbeing.
